Say hello to Anson Street, a four lane street that holds access to a parking lot, taxi bays and loading zones. In the interest of "the safety of pedestrians", the Council installed a pedestrian crossing.

Personally, I like it, since it's one of the few places where a pedestrian (like myself) gets right-of-way. But now it's not an uncommon sight for traffic to be backed up, right along the block and even around the corner.

Not that being the city with the highest number-of-cars-per-person would have anything to do with that. Nope. Not at all.

Me, I wasn't too concerned about the issue of traffic flow with this new crossing. As far as I'm concerned, people should drive on other roads - it's not like there is a shortage. And if they need access to their car, then people: park in the free undercover parking across the road and accessible around the corner, and walk.

But asking me to stop and cross when enough people accumulate in order to accomodate the cars? Forget it. I'm just going to cross the road. Why? Because it's a pedestrian crossing - I have right-of-way.
